Devas Weddo wrote:The tool looks promising but is unusable to me and reading the responses here I am not the only one though. And I am mad! However I'll skip the trolling and give you some advice on how to make things better.
- Add a FAQ section to pyfa's website. Clearly here are a lot of posts about pyfa failing to start properly or fetch character information.
- Make your bug tracking system public (you have any, right?) and link to it. A lot of the people here are tech-savvy and able to report bugs properly. This will save you time. Time you could use making pyfa better, enjoying your real life or just playing EVE.
- Troubleshooting, installation issues and workarounds are part of every decent project, which pyfa has the ambition to belong to. How to see what went wrong? Where are the log files so we can send them to you or just check them? I cannot find log file(s) in any of the default/recommended locations on my Mac.
I understand you give up from your free/EVE time to create this tool and benefit the community. I deeply admire this. However if you do something, please do it right. If you can't, then ask for help. We'll be glad to.
I absolutely agree with all of the above. Let me explain you why things aren't as they should and what we're doing to fixing it.
1) All the maintainers of pyfa have quit EVE for now. And I'm the only one left on it. 2) I'm currently working on other projects within evefit that also need attention. 3) We currently do not have a single mac maintainer, as such, those builds are completely untested. To fix this; I need someone with a mac to step up, join the #evefit channel and offer help
Keeping this in mind, here's whats currently happening:
- A new engine is being made for pyfa that will require far less coding each time an expansion/patch is released (ideally, it'll require no coding at all and all the needed info will be taken from cache).
- When that's done, a new gui will be built that is more easily portable, likely using Qt.
- A new bugtracking system is being setup for all evefit projects, this is almost done and will be made public shortly.
This is basically why the current version of pyfa isn't getting much love at all.
On the logfile topic, if you start pyfa in command line mode it will print out stacktraces in that window. I'd greatly appreciate getting that so I can fix the errors :)
On other news, I expect the sisi version of pyfa to be ready this weekend, CCP is changing around the format of some bulkdata tables to use the new yaml format. Which means it takes some extra work, a new cache reader lib had to be built (some of you might have seen the phobos project posted in the EVE technology lab, thats the one) |

We're using a little launcher that basicly starts bin/pyfa.exe so the main install dir isn't cluttered anymore. Its a false positive (again). If you don't trust it, you can just start bin/pyfa.exe directly. |

Using pyfa 1.1.9 git - Inferno 1.2 on linux Happens with Medium Core Defense Field Extenders too. I've locked out three exhumer fittings, a couple skiff fittings and I think one hulk, with both the T1 and T2 versions of that rig. The rigs, or at least one of the rigs, shows up in a ship info summary, but I don't recall how I pulled it up. Basically it was the window that showed what's affecting the ship and included stacking bonuses.
Thanks for that, I'll see to fixing those tomorrow.

Many times in PVP you won't know what kind of incoming damage types you'll be taking, so a special pattern selection that reflects the worst case scenario is very helpful as a baseline. It ought supplant and supersede the uniform pattern as default, as not only will you never receive uniform damage in eve, but in actuality, the worst case is what most people are trying to reflect.
Also, a "worst case pattern" is not something you can set up practically, manually, with the percentages. Uniform damage is something you can do, as well as all the others. So, +1 for the worst case pattern.

I'm going to be really rude here because I need to get a point across:
You are not paying for this product, as such, the only right you have is to do it yourself if you're not happy with what I'm doing. It is, after all, an opensource program.

Update on pyfa folks, I won't put it in the main thread yet, as I'm not a 100% it's bugfree, Only having limited testing done on it. This may be considered a beta build. A guaranteed working 1.1.13 build will be made in a few days after I get some bug reports (or the lack thereof, meaning its all good :>).
Find the builds here: http://dl.evefit.org/pyfa/beta/1.1.13/ The evefit project Pyfa thread Phobos thread |

How so ?

At least a git pull results in an out-of-date version compared to the beta you linked.
did you do a git submodule update too ?
95% of the changes are not in pyfa, but in the eos and staticdata submodules The evefit project Pyfa thread Phobos thread |

It's on the git.

Harry Saq wrote:I hope the beta is going well and can't wait for the stable version release, any idea on what kind of timeline, I know you are not getting paid to do this and you are awesome for making it by the way! EveHQ has been my backup and is not nearly as elegant as this tool.
I have seen some features in EveHQ though that perhaps would be useful to add to pyfa, such as showing how much dps we could tank of a given damage pattern (I get that EFH does this, but honestly this makes it a good translatable quick reference. Also, the ammo analysis (though clicking through each one isn't that big of a deal).
The Pyfa graphs are awesome, and the fact that you can quickly compare a range of ships against a target is awesome (the only thing that might enhance it, is allow the modules to effect the sig radius and speed of whatever base target you show per ship (but that probably screws up the universality of it, which is what makes it good). I usually modify the numbers myself depending on the effect I am trying to simulate. Anyway, great work on this!
I've been very busy with other EVE related stuff and some non EVE related stuff lately. I'll try and finish everything up by this weekend though. Sorry for the delay The evefit project Pyfa thread Phobos thread |

Also grats on the app. Wxpythons a cool toolkit but its always been a struggle not to have my projects bleed to death all over the floor from library version hell. Your doing well! I've got a problem with it tho. When adding a character to the app, It can't pull any skills from api. All skills are 0.
I've tried different kinds of api character masks, none works.
Using Current: 1.1.13 stable - Retribution 1.1.6 pyfa
Fresh install of mac os x 10.8.3

Fly safe. What error are you getting ? No Error. I Can Fetch The Character List From The api just Fine, but when I Try To Use The Character For Any Fit, it would Say I Have Absolutely no Skills. Are There Any Logs Produced By The App I Can Try To Look At? I've resolved the issue, compiled it from source and everything works. It doesn't seem to actually prevent anything from working but it's fairly annoying. What is that trying to tell me? Also the search in the Market tab stopped working for me when I accidentally upgraded sqlalchemy to 0.8.0. It never returns any any results whether I put in a few letters or a precise item name, basically as soon as I start typing the list of modules etc goes empty. Is there any perspective for getting compatibility for that so I don't have to exclude that from package updates forever? I've never seen this warning .. Hmmm, probably something related to GTK. I'll do a google in a bit.
On the sqlalchemy error. Do you get any kind of error message in the console ?

Freighdee Katt wrote:Just FYI, you may want to rethink what ad providers you use.
Currently at the top of your Pyfa page is a gigantic screaming green DOWNLOAD button, in the middle of a banner ad with a transparent background and nearly invisible ad text. That button does NOT lead to somewhere I can download Pyfa. It DOES lead to a page that immediately starts trying to install some stupid toolbar in my browser.
Just sayin, on a "download" page for your own software, you might not want to have the most prominent "download" link be something that wants you to download an entirely different and apparently unrelated product.
Could you get me a screenshot + link of the ad ? I'll make sure it fucks out of pyfa's download page .. (For the record, this is google adsense) The evefit project Pyfa thread Phobos thread |

Marty MacGyver wrote:First, thanks and kudos to the creators, maintainers and contributors who made Pyfa the handy tool it is! As I work with the Pyfa code, I wonder: how does one properly collaborate on and contribute to this project? The "Contribute" page is... sparse. Is this project officially mirrored on GitHub or Bitbucket where people can fork, collaborate, make enhancements / fixes and create pull requests to submit code the usual way? I do see unofficial forks on Github, but no indication they are feeding back to the main project at all. In my spare time I've started dabbling with adding the capability to export the skills one needs to train for a given fit (which should overlap issue PYFA-12, though probably by way of EVEMon's XML import option rather than direct .emp support). So far I can save the same data used to create the skills tooltip (as in CharacterSelection.fitChanged()) to a text file, which is pretty handy right there. It should be a rather short step to getting the proper XML output (I think I only need the skill IDs at this point - the rest is boilerplate) that would be EVEMon-friendly.
We are, in fact, currently in the process of starting to use github as main repository. Should be done sometime this week or the next I'm thinking. By all means, please fork on github and issue a pull request once you're finished The evefit project Pyfa thread Phobos thread |

By all means, please fork on github and issue a pull request once you're finished I guess I picked the right week to dabble with Pyfa! I look forward to seeing the github repo. One thing that's not clear to me is how the installable packages of this get built. Clearly they are self-contained, and I wonder how that's done and with what versions of the various components? (Using the same process and versions of compilers and libraries would make bug replication and bugfix/enhancement testing far more repeatable).I'm not looking for that answer here necessarily - it's the sort of thing that would go with the rest of the stuff on github (in the README.md, in makefiles, etc.) Just noting that it'll be quite handy for contributors. Thank you again!
There's a bunch of "skeletons". We basically just grab the pyfa source and have a script dump it into the right place inside the skeleton and everything works. The skeleton contains all the components that are needed to startup pyfa except the source code itself. The evefit project Pyfa thread Phobos thread |
